Apadi podu podu!!

Apadi podu podu is a Tamil "dappankuthu" song that has been my morning alarm for the past 2 months much to the chagrin of my family alongwith anyone who hears of this!

(For a rather scholarly treatise on dappaankuthu, pls visit - http://aishwaryarao.blogspot.com/2006/09/apdi-podu.html
Why apadi podu?....I have no idea - its just that I seem to wakeup happier :-)

Just check this link out and maybe you'll understand the energy in this song - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z59zz_-sxiU

Ok, now that I've got a topic to start a blog, let me see if I can overcome my blogger's block which has beseiged me for the past few weeks.....I really can't think of much to write about. Let's see how the world has been in the past few weeks and let me see if can pick up some threads:
  • Breaking news: CBI zeroes in on Arushi Case murderer....yeah the headline should probably end at CBI zeroes!
  • Left threatens to withdraw support to govt on nuclear deal - It is so strange - how many people can actually speak 10 coherent, distinct, well-constructed sentences with enough data to support or oppose the deal. Yet everyone seems to have a strong passionate view on the subject (While there is one camp which feels that since it is with the US, it must be bad, and another camp which feels that since it is being opposed by the Left, it must be great)
  • Ingrid Betancourt rescued from FARC - really nice to know that this person i) existed, ii) was kidnapped 6 years back and iii) has been released
  • Spain wins Euro cup - cant write a blog on this...cause my knowledge of football is what is very intelligently articulated by Bomman Irani in the movie "Goal - Heroes will rise" ...."Football khelne ke liye do cheezon ki zaroorat hai - Ek sarr, doosra pairr!"
  • Sensex dips, inflation rises - now that might get me to write something 4jow, but no, The master economist that Prince Charming is, he wont comment on the future trend till it becomes a thing of the past.
  • Dhoni complains about the schedule in Asia cup....BCCI complains that Dhoni did not complain during IPL.
...Well this where I left the blog the last time....Had to do two back-to-back visits to Ahmedabad over the last 2 weeks.

Am now back at my desk.

In the past 2 weeks I have been watching episodes and episodes of Mind Your Language on Moser Baer dvd. The British definitely take the cake when it comes to humour. Isn't the world a better place because of accents? Especially in India....being someone who has been all over the country, it gives me such pleasure of ownership of supreme knowledge every time I hear people in one part of the country lampooning the accent of the other parts of the country without realising that they themselves have an accent (and an equally funny one when it is thick).

If there is such a term as a "British Accent", then let us not delude ourselves - everyone has some accent (provincial, regional, fake....any which way, the accent is present)

I think it is only in India, that you can actually get a good insight into the background of a person, by the way a person speaks English or Hindi (chances are...there will be an even more opinionated insight if the person doesn't either of these languages)...

Jump to another level, what would be the case if we have Indians from different regions getting married to each other...(no I am not talking about the metro-politan metro-hetero-sexual love marriage mixtures)...I am talking of a situation where the old fashioned arranged marriages transcend cultural, linguistic and religious boundaries and kids are born into multicultural joint families. There are already news reports of Haryanvis looking around for mallu brides to match the supply demand mismatch of women across these two states. - http://www.ibnlive.com/news/desperate-haryana-grooms-resort-to-importing-brides/60763-3-1.html

If given an upbringing with equal slant towards either of the communities - CAN YOU EVEN IMAGINE WHAT WILL HAPPEN!! Forget everything else.....the sales of alchohol will definitely shoot through the sky :-p......but even with or without alchohol.....a cocktail of these two eminent cultures will create a potent accent, the speaker of which will be permanently accused of alchohol abuse.

Post-script: The author of this blog is also a beneficiary of an inter-regional alliance. So much of the humour is rather self-deprecatory in nature.

[I took another 4 week break at this stage....This is probably the slowest blog on earth]

Speaking of accents again...I spent a few months in Hyderabad, and I saw a new post-modern linguistic phenomenon - I would call it - america-return-5 years back-but-accent-still-yo-itis.

I was peacefully working in a conference room, when I hear an excited statement in what would have probably been a mixture of Boston and Ohio speak (I'm just it terming as such to create provide the punch - I wouldn;t know the difference between Boston and Ohio accents, even if I lived in each of these places for 5-10 years) - "Is this kk-aaaaa-n-f-rince room tayykkn?".....and then another responds..."I'm affffraid it is tayykkkn"......."Oww-right....wha about that kk-aaaa-n-f-rince room over there"...."I'm afffraid tha un's tayyykkn too".....

Itme mein baahar aake dekha ki yeh kaun hai jo conference room ki le raha hai...aur doosra kaun hai jo bahut darr raha hai....and then what do I notice.....I see two persons who appear to be from the great, graceful and glorious land of Andhra Pradesh.....We South Indians can beat the rest of world, when we put our heart and soul into being pretentious.

I know another chap who once replied...."Guilty of what?".....when I asked him..."Are you a gulty?"......and btw he was a gulti who had lived all his life in Hyd, with a 6 month interlude in the US.

As a very bambaiyya very down to earth friend of mine put it....."Saala mere ko ek baat chamakta nahin hai in champak logon ka....pYda idhar ko hua hai...bees-baaWiss saal idhar guzaara....6 mahin america ghoomega aur waapis aake agle bees saal tak...."oh mane! whaw da fuk...whaw da fuk"...karta rahega...

Kasam se re hero....aaj tak mere ko bhi yeh cheez chamka nahin hai.
